摘要

This study has reviewed the OCA literature and the political economy literature on monetary union, and discussed the likelihood of an East Asian monetary union emerging. OCA theory has an important limitation in that it is not effective in explaining the actual formation of monetary unions. It is at this point that the political economy literature makes substantial contributions. Application of the major findings in these two academic approaches to East Asia suggests that even though the region seems to some extent a feasible candidate for monetary union from the economic perspective, political conditions in the region may hinder creation of an East Asian monetary union.
