British American Tobacco bucked the economic downturn, delivering 'excellent results' in 2008, according to Chairman Jan du Plessis. Sales were up 21 % to £12.1 bn, buoyed by the acquisitions of former Turkish state-owned Tekel and the cigarette and snus business of Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni... and a nose-diving Sterling.rnGroup operating profit was up 24% to £3,7bn with f 295mn down to falls in the UK currency. Pre-tax profit rose from £3.1 bn to £3.7bn.rnGlobal Drive Brands (premium cigarettes) were ahead 16%, with a quarter of the increase down to brand migrations. Kent was up 18% and Pall Mall 22%, each topping 60bn sticks for the first time. Lucky Strike was up 9% and Dunhill 7%.
