The Mysore crop auctions have got off to a strong start with 19mn kg sold as of October 15, according to Universal Leaf estimates. Prior to the auctions opening speculation was rife over potential higher average price realisation for the export quality crop due largely to improved farming practices introduced by the ILTD (Indian Leaf Tobacco Development division of ITC Ltd). Farmers in Hunsur and Periapatna taluks in Karnataka have pursuesd improved farm practices, both in terms of organic cultivation and post-harvest curing, grading and baling. Under a model village development programme taken up by the ILTD, with support from the Tobacco Board and CTRI, Hunsur (covering some 52 villages), tobacco farmers have tried to attain a higher (per hectare) average yield of 1,800-2,000 kg from 1,200-1,300 kg per ha.
