German smokers have had to shoulder three big tobacco duty increases since the beginning of 2002, and now they are bracing themselves for another two that are due to be imposed before the end of next year. ALEXIS STACCHINI analyses the major changes in demand that are buffeting the previously stable German cigarette market. Sales of duty-paid, factory-made cigarettes in Germany, the largest market in Western Europe, fell significantly last year and during the opening months of this year as the impact of the country's ailing economy and higher tobacco taxes took effect. Between January and April, sales of factory-made cigarettes totalled 38.8bn, down 5.1 bn or 11.6% on those of the equivalent period of last year. Demand for branded cigarettes was worst affected with sales falling by 4.9 bn or 13.2%. Sales of trade cigarettes, sold by supermarket or discount chains, declined by 0.3bn or 4.4%. During April and May, sales of industry brands were respectively 25.7% and 20% lower than they were during the equivalent months of last year and the proportion of sales accounted for by trade brands had increased to more than 17%.
