I Object to the way that pressure groups, such as those opposed to tobacco and genetically modified crops, use the results of good and bad research indiscriminately so long as those results support their causes - often on the granny principle that 'we' know best and the end justifies the means. A recent example was a report from the British Medical Association (BMA) Science and Education Department and the Board of Science and Education that claimed to be the first focused overview of the impact of smoking on reproductive and child health in the UK. A headline in The Weekly Telegraph in mid-February 2004 read, Smoking kills up to 5,000 foetuses a year, one of a number of claims attributed to the BMA report that was being publicised by Dr Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's head of ethics.
