Japan tobacco's Canadian subsidiary, JTI-Macdonald, has sought protection from creditors to avoid bankruptcy following a demand for C$ 1.4bn from the Quebec government. The province is claiming the money in compensation for the loss of revenue it suffered because of the alleged smuggling of cigarettes from the US and the Caribbean between 1991 and 1996. The authorities in Quebec estimate that at the height of the alleged smuggling, black market products accounted for about 60% of the province's cigarette market.
