British American Tobacco plans to transfer some of its cigarette manufacturing to Kenya from Europe to avoid problems resulting from the EU's tough anti-tobacco stance, according to BAT Kenya (BATK). The transfer will increase local production by about 40%, so BATK has imported and is currently installing machinery and equipment worth Sh500m to expand its manufacturing capacity. While Benson & Hedges has been available in East Africa for some years, the new plant will make it possible to introduce Royals Kings and Lights, and Bensons & Hedges Kings and Lights. And it will allow BATK to ease distribution in Somalia and Djibouti. The company already manufactures under contract the export brands, Burrus and Sons and John Player Gold Leaf.
