Uganda has been exploiting the opportunities recently thrown up by changes to the geography of leaf tobacco production and trade. This year it is expected to produce about 34.6m kg of tobacco, down slightly from the 35.8m kg of last year but up significantly from the 25.0m kg of 2002, according to the co-ordinator of the Uganda Tobacco Growers' Association, Mr Martin Gwoke. Part of the reason for Uganda's success is down to the problems suffered by Zimbabwe during recent seasons. "The drop in Zimbabwe's tobacco production from 250m to 70m kg due to the disruption of its agricultural sector and the opening of the Chinese market following that country's entry to the WTO, has presented a golden opportunity for Uganda," said Mr Charles Kirim, the general manager of Continental Tobacco Uganda.
