摘要

I am told that cigarette smokers often complain they cannot keep their hands and feet warm in cold weather. It has long been assumed that nicotine was responsible for this, by causing poor blood circulation. Now there is mounting evidence that it is certainly not the main factor involved. In 2002, I reported in World Tobacco for Asia the case of James Jang, a medical student at Stanford Medical School in the US, who, when investigating the effect of nicotine on veins, found that it had the reverse effect - stimulating cell division and the growth of new blood vessels. Now I see in Science News, vol. 165, p 314, 2004 that researchers at Yale University report corroborative evidence to discount nicotine as causing poor circulation. One of the tests was to immerse the hands of participants in water at 5℃ for 40 minutes, while sensors monitored the reaction by the blood vessels. They repeated the test in two sessions. Smokers were not allowed to smoke for 16 hours before the test, but in one they wore a nicotine patch. Non-smokers did both sessions without nicotine patches.
