When the men of ancient Egypt ferried stones from the desert quarries across the Nile and fashioned them into the Great Pyramid, the arid conditions undoubtedly had an impact. Nothing has changed. The simplicity of the problems of deserts - lack of water, high temperatures and dust, make them easy to underestimate. The difference is, modern technology is in place to help overcome them. Dickinson Legg, a UK manufacturer of primary tobacco machinery, was recently contracted to build a high-tech plant in the desert at Talbaya in Giza. An Egyptian tobacco company required a 3,500m~2, single-storey, tobacco stem expansion process plant, to be built within one of its existing sites. It wanted state-of-the-art technology that was efficient, environmentally compliant and required the minimum of supervision or maintenance.
