Chris Bickers visits an exhibition of historical spittoons and cuspidors, which has proved unexpectedly popular for a museum devoted to tobacco. The doors opened last February in the museum at the Duke Homestead Historic Site in Durham, North Carolina, on what is believed to be the first historical display devoted solely to spittoons and cuspidors. Called The Spitting Image: A History of Spittoons and Cuspidors' and made up of more than 50 different artifacts and educational displays, the exhibit was originally scheduled to close on December 1, But the curators realised they had a hit on their hands, and the exhibit has been indefinitely extended into 2005.
