Even if the weather is good, the Greek leaf tobacco industry can always rely on the European Commission to put a damper on its season. The local leaf tobacco industry was in sombre mood when World Tobacco visited Greece in November. The production last year of-generally good quality crops of oriental, flue-cured and Burley could not assuage the feelings of sadness, bitterness and anger engendered by the prospect that, by 2006, no significant amounts of tobacco would be grown in Greece. It did not help, of course, that the industry was looking ahead shortly to selling the poor quality oriental crop of 2002.
