摘要

This year was one of the wettest on record and it followed one of the driest in 2002. But despite the wet, blue mould and a hurricane, the US' tobacco crops seemed to be ready to deliver satisfactory yields and quality. Flue-cured Just how wet was it in southeastern Virginia, where that state's tobacco is grown? Well, in Blackstone, where the state's tobacco research station is located, 46 inches of rain fell during the growing season, which runs from April through to the end of September. "That is four inches more than we normally average in a year!" said David Reed, Virginia extension tobacco agronomist. "We had a lot of tobacco that started out water damaged and stayed that way till it was harvested. At end of the year, many came up short on yield, which is not typical for our growers."
