As the international tobacco industry was preparing to converge on Barcelona for TABEXPO, we asked SILVIA CAMPO, who was born in Spain, to provide a glimpse of her country and what it means to be Spanish. Smoking in Spain is a way of life; or, at least, it used to be. Having left my country for England over eight years ago, it never ceases to surprise me during visits home how many smokers there seem to be around. At most bars and restaurants, the staff would look puzzled if you asked them to direct you to the no-smoking area. Once, I was even served at a pharmacy by a chemist who, despite his professional-looking white coat, was puffing away happily. Granted, some things have changed recently: you cannot, for example, light up during a coach trip any more. But the sight of people smoking just about everywhere is what always tells me that I am back home. Smelling cigarette smoke at the airport as soon as the plane had landed, even before passport control ― that used to be the first sign.
