Maybe because it seems dull, pricing is the most neglected tool in marketing and does not get the attention it deserves in creating marketing strategies. Consider these two cases. Firstly, the Japanese whisky market where, for many years, Scotch and other imported whiskies were subjected to high import duties, which meant that they were priced above locally produced whisky. This led consumers to believe that imported brands were superior to the local ones. This was not necessarily a reality because Suntory and other Japanese producers make excellent, world-class whiskies, but that is what consumers thought. When the tax on imports was removed, the imported brands put their prices down to compete 'on a level playing field' with the local whiskies.
