摘要

In the weekly Telegraph (an overseas selection of news published in the Daily Telegraph) of July 9-15, 2003 (issue 624), Nicole Martin reported that Sir Liam Donaldson, the UK government's chief medical adviser, had told government ministers that outlawing smoking in pubs, clubs, restaurants and at work would sharply reduce the level of lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma caused by passive smoking. He claimed that a ban would encourage the 12m adult smokers in the UK to give up the habit and create a social environment similar to that in the US, where not smoking had become the norm.
