Underground works involve a certain geological uncertainty inherent in the complexity and/or variability of the natural environment, and in the necessarily partial knowledge gained through ground investigation. To control as far as possible the effects of this uncertainty, several risk-management approaches have been developed aimed at evaluating the level of risk. Risk analysis is considered an efficient tool to anticipate and control. It can provide early warnings of the potential consequences of various technical choices made. More and more interest is accorded to these analyses because the financial consequences of unexpected geological events are likely to affect the success of any project. On which assumptions are these analyses based? How can they be implemented and what degree of confidence can be afforded to the results? This is the subject developed in this article.
