For deep shaft-sinking, a grout curtain may be established from surface drilling for the initial section of the sink. Typically, this is a cheaper approach, especially from a schedule perspective, as these geotechnical works may be carried out concurrent with other activities and off the critical path of sinking.rnAfter a certain depth, the hole deviations make it much more difficult to establish a grout curtain around the workings from surface, and the switch is made to grouting from the shaft bottom, in a similar manner to grouting ahead of a tunnel face.
