Looking up from the dishes, Pauline shared the tumultuous story of how she and her younger sister Mary fled the orphanage in Congo on a bus in 2008. Twelve years later, their home is in Kyangwali - a refugee camp in the west of Uganda living with Pauline's eight-year-old son Elijah. Having escaped the civil war in Congo, a different battle now plays out for Pauline and her family - the slow struggle for survival in a place where access to even the most basic services, such as safe water, is severely limited. Because safe water is a cornerstone of the majority of the SDGs, access to it affects personal lives and the development of communities. This article is based on the personal experiences of the female Congolese refugees Pauline and Mary and Dr. Gerald Mbabazi, a local health professional with years of experience in prenatal healthcare. Their encounters are reflective of the water crisis in Uganda - and worldwide.
