Recognizing the need to reduce water consumption and improve how their networks are managed, some forward-thinking cities around the globe have started to invest large quantities of time and money into smart water management projects. According to the United Nations program UN-Habitat, the number of people living in urban areas across the globe is increasing by two people every second, and most of the world's population is now living in cities. With this figure still expected to rise, cities around the world are experiencing major challenges, particularly with ensuring that they can expand sustainably, operate efficiently, and maintain a high quality of life for residents. As water is such a vital resource, the expanding population is putting pressure on the planet's already limited water supply, and urban water systems are struggling to cope.
