Devastating floods in the UK and Europe are bringing to light the enormous costs of short- and long-term flood protection for local authorities, utility companies, businesses, and homeowners at risk. Recognizing the need for a more cost-effective, reusable, and mobile system that addresses these concerns, the Norwegian company AquaFence developed a patented design that also addresses the failings of traditional flood protection methods such as sandbags: high cost, low strength, water leakage, slow deployment, and expensive and time-consuming disposal. John Stead, managing director for UK and Ireland, AquaFence UK explained: "Relative to sandbags, the most common form of flood protection, AquaFence has the potential to maximize budgets due to a low initial cost and the fact that it can be used over and over again, whereas sandbags are strictly one-use only."
