Given the significant transformations underway in aca-demia, it is pertinent to ask whether the traditional notion of entering the profession in response to a calling is still relevant. Drawing on interviews with forty academics in Germany and the United States, this study finds that almost all exhibit a calling orientation. However, their responses indicate that the nature of callings has changed. The internationalization of academic standards and procedures and the high level of competition for few positions in both contexts seem to outweigh the effects of culture and tradition.%Auf der Grundlage von Interviews mit 40 Wissenschaftler*in-nen in Deutschland und den USA untersucht diese Studie, ob die traditionelle Vorstellung vom Eintritt in die Wissenschaft aufgrund einer inneren Berufung noch immer relevant ist. Fast alle Befragten sprechen von einer Art innerer Berufung, doch die Art und der Prozess haben sich geändert. Unerwartete Gemeinsamkeiten im länderübergreifenden Vergleich legen den Schluss nahe, dass die In-ternationalisierung akademischer Standards und Verfahren die Effekte von Kultur und Tradition überwiegt.
