摘要

Civil society is a key term in political and scientific parlance. Since its renaissance among the dissidents of East Central Europe, it has spread widely and presently enjoys new currency throughout the world. The contributions in the WZB-Yearbook 2003 address the subject of civil society, focusing particularly on the aspects that have been overshadowed in discussion and research thus far. They include unclarified conceptual issues, historical and systematic analyses of civil society's boundaries and shifts in them, recent developments in the intermediate area between the state, the market, and the private sphere, forms of community self-organization in weak or failing states, and transitions from state regulation to governance structures. Special attention is also given to transnational approaches of civil society in relation to accelerating processes of globalization. Overall, the studies convey a picture of the multifaceted nature of phenomena in civil society and illustrate its fragility and vitality, its limitedness and multiple possibilities - and thereby its ambiguities.
