German health care policy is increasingly influenced by a dynamic process of Europeanization. The Lisbon strategy combined with the regulatory requirements of the Economic and Monetary Union are particularly important in this process. The application to health care policy of the open method of coordination as a new mode of European regulation being applied to health care policy involves conflicting tendencies: on the one hand it will increase the pressure on member states to contain and privatize costs, on the other hand it may contribute to eliminating deficiencies within the German health care system.%In Europa gilt die Sozialpolitik weitgehend als ein Bereich, in dem die Nationalstaaten den Ton angeben. Das trifft vor allem auf die Gesundheitspolitik zu: Fragen der Krankenversorgung und etwaiger institutioneller Reformen werden in der Regel als nationale Angelegenheiten behandelt, gleichgültig, ob das Gesundheitswesen durch staatliche Systeme oder Sozialversicherungen geprägt ist.
