Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ist der Wohlfahrts-Staat normativem Druck ausgesetzt; das libertäre Paradigma sieht durch ihn individuelle Freiheit und Autonomie auf illegitime Weise verhindert. Normativtheoretisch ist diese Annahme jedoch nicht zu halten. Im Gegenteil: nur ein geeigneter Wohlfahrtsstaat vermag die individuelle Freiheit und Autonomie zu sichern, die zugleich die Kernprinzipien liberaler Demokratie darstellen. Der Wohlfahrtsstaat muss als notwendige Voraussetzung der Demokratie gelten.%At the beginning of the 21st century the welfare state is under normative pressure, because it is said to curtail individual freedom and autonomy. Our findings reject this assumption by demonstrating that the welfare state is essentially necessary for individual freedom and autonomy. Furthermore, it is shown that individual freedom is the core principle of liberal democracy and that the welfare state is therefore an indispensable prerequisite for democracy.
