  • Manhole Rehabilitation: Design Engineering, Installation and Quality Assurance Testing

    In a previous paper entitled "The Practical Design Approach to Coatings and Liners for the Rehabilitation of Cylindrical Shaped Manhole Structures" the author presented useful information on how the soil-structure interaction system impacts the lateral loading on a cylindrically-shaped vertical shaft (or manhole) and how it deviates significantly from the longitudinal vertical loading of horizontally oriented buried pipes; and with that knowledge, what loads are likely to be borne by the coatings or lining systems used in their renewal. In this paper the author presents how the engineer receives delivery on the assumptions used in his/her design through the employment of proper installation and quality assurance practices which are to be conveyed in the project specifications. While all coatings rely on an adhesive bond with the existing wall surface of the manhole structure, liners can be either bonded or un-bonded to the wall surface of the structure. The above referenced paper on design demonstrated that the load coming onto these coatings and liners is, for all practical purposes, that of the external hydrostatic pressure generated by the groundwater surrounding the structure. In the design case of a bonded liner or coating, it is imperative that the level of adhesion accounted for in the engineer's design process be attained by the contractor's installation practices in the field. Further, because of the challenges of working in these structures; it is incumbent upon the engineer to lay out a quality assurance testing methodology that confirms that a minimum level of adhesion was achieved throughout the structure. Un-bonded liners are, by definition, relying upon their own inherent strength to attain the stated design life of the renewal. Long-term structural stability of these un-bonded cylindrical shells is a function of the flexural modulus of the cured lining system, the level of uniformity of the cylindrical shell's shape (i.e. variations in the radii along the vertical axis), and the type of end termination detailed for the proposed shell structure at the bottom of the manhole. Additionally, the shell must be able to maintain its water-tightness at the bottom of the manhole. Flexible un-bonded shell materials must be designed to account for the linearly increasing external loading acting on the liner and the deformation that will result from this loading configuration over the designed service life of this renewal system. Seals are thus quite essential for these shells. The installation and quality assurance practices must reflect the needs of the lining system(s) chosen by the Engineer; thereby assuring the owner that the performance expectations of the work will be achieved for the necessary service life period.

    Continuous Improvement Pays Big Dividends - Evolution of PVC Restrained-Joint Piping Systems Segmented restrained-joint PVC pipe has been a well-accepted product as a result of the numerous advantages it offers to the Engineering and Contracting communities. These advantages include corrosion resistance, joint strength, flow performance, and ease of assembly with minimal right-of-way disruption. As more experience has been gained, spline-lock PVC pipe has been enhanced with a more robust sealing system for enhanced hydraulic integrity, and to better tolerate various installation conditions, including bending and angular deflection often seen on the job-site. The presentation will highlight the engineering design, development, and structural analysis of the enhanced system in C900 sizes. Segmented systems allow for quick installation, especially where assembly must take place within pits. Presentation will also focus on the rigorous product qualification process, which involved lab tests and customer trials. Product applications include water transmission, sewer force mains, and storm sewers where Horizontal Directional Drilling and Static Pipe bursting methods are used. Products can also be used for conventional open-cut construction where there is a need to eliminate concrete thrust blocks. Presentation will utilize case studies from several projects to illustrate the new technology solution. Mission of the Session This presentation will of interest to Consulting Engineers, Municipal Engineers, and Contractors, as the information to be presented will provide them with a way to confidently consider multiple materials for trenchless projects.

This novel cleaning and lining technology enables rapid return to service and can be deployed by water utility maintenance crews. 4. Future research will focus on new composite polymeric linings that provide higher strength and total corrosion protection.
