  • Supersonic particle deposition coatings for improved Tribological performance of offshore wind turbine gears

    Tribology of renewable energy systems such as for wind turbines is a relatively new field and the study of which has a potential to reduce turbine component failures and turbine downtime. In this paper we focus on offshore wind turbines tribological issues in comparison to on-shore counterparts and address a coating deposition method which has potential to be used in wind turbine industry. In this paper we look into the turbine drivetrain parts such as gears. To prove the effect of severe offshore conditions a simulation of wind turbine gear loads using a FAST analysis of an NREL 5MW reference wind turbine has been shown. In this simulation a time varying torque is used to simulate the hertzian stresses at the planet and sun gear mesh of the 1st planetary gear stage. Results show increase in the contact stresses when compared to onshore counterparts, due to the additional hydrodynamic loading in the offshore wind turbines. This means that the gears would undergo accelerated failure when compared to gears used in onshore type turbines. In addition to that, inaccessibility of the turbine for maintenance will increase the cost of energy. To mitigate these effects tribological coatings can be a solution to reduce gearbox failures and thus reduce turbine downtime. The selection of such technologies not only depend on coating material but the coating process itself which dictates the coating properties and thus the performance of the mating surfaces. In this paper we are going to discuss about supersonic particle deposition which is otherwise called cold spray coating. The principle, advantages and suitability of this technology to large wind turbine gears will be discussed in detail.

  • Analysis and design of isolated single-switch converter for magnetron filament heating

    This paper presents the analysis and design of isolated voltage-fed single-switch soft-switched converter for magnetron filament heating. A step-down transformer is used to obtain the required voltage conversion ratio and isolation. By low-damped resonance, the primary transistor achieves zero-voltage switching. The secondary diode naturally attains zero-current switching due to discontinuous current. An additional inductor is added to the secondary current loop to stabilize the charging current. To verify the analysis and design, a prototype converter is built and tested. The simulation and experimental results coincide with the prediction.

  • Dynamic reactive power in compliance with low voltage ride-through enhancement for DFIG-based wind turbine

    Wind power plant is regarded as a large-scale system where the interconnections between each subsystem cannot be neglected, otherwise the control strategy cannot guarantee the robustness and system satisfactory efficiency over a wide range of operation. Moreover, voltage stability is the most important ancillary service to preserve doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) connected to the grid during fault, known as Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT). In this paper, multiple local controller strategy is introduced to improve LVRT capability and to guarantee the system-wise stability. However, voltage at individual point of common coupling (PCC) is controlled to minimize the risk of instability because of high flow reactive power. Unlike classical decentralized methods, all energy and material flows are bounded by real constraints in this paper. A model of wind farm equipped with DFIG is also introduced to illustrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithm.

  • Switching-Based charger with time division charging control scheme for parallel charging

    This paper presents a switching-based charger with a time division fast charging (TDFC) control to decrease circuit complexity and charging time for multiple batteries. Time division scheme can deliver a different energy amount to each battery to achieve battery voltage balance and remove the effect of the battery's parasitic resistor to prolong the charging time in constant current (CC) stage. To reduce charging time, the charging current in CC stage is regulated and the auxiliary switches are wholly turned on in constant voltage stage. Hence, the functionalities of battery voltage balance and fast charging can be achieved simultaneously. Experimental results are shown to verify the theoretical analysis of the proposed charger.

  • Enumerated-MPC-based dynamic voltage restorer using lc filter with damping resistor

    This paper presents an enumerated model predictive control (MPC) based method for the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), which consists of a series-connected transformer and a voltage source inverter. The filter adopted in the DVR is a LC filter with a damping resistor. The design of the discrete model for the voltage source inverter and the corresponding controller are discussed in this paper. The proposed method is capable to regulate the DVR to compensate the sag, swell and harmonic distortions of the grid voltage. Simulation studies are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed enumerated MPC-based method, and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective to achieve the protection of the loads from the grid voltage sag, swell and harmonic distortion.

  • Optimal Depth-of-Discharge range and capacity settings for battery energy storage in microgrid operation

    Battery energy storage (BES) plays an important role for mitigation of microgrids power imbalance induced by the intermittency of renewable sources and load changes. Due to high capital cost, optimal sizing of BES is crucial for economic operation of a microgrid. Conventionally, the optimal sizing of a BES is determined without considering the operating range of battery stored energy under varying system resource and load conditions. In this paper, both depth of discharge range and capacity are determined under the minimum system operation cost. Time varying resource and load conditions are considered in the optimization. The effects of BES lifetime degradation and energy not supplied are quantified and incorporated in system operation cost function. The BES lifetime degradation cost and customer interruption cost models are developed. The proposed method is implemented to a microgrid operation and verified using MATLAB simulation.

  • A novel three phase infinite level inverter (TILI) topology for induction motor drive application

    A novel structure of Three Phase Infinite Level Inverter (TILI) topology has been derived from elementary Single Phase ILI (SILI). The rudiment structure of this topology is a DC-to-DC Buck converter followed by a H-Bridge. Fully rectified SPWM (FrSPWM) technique is used as control logic for implementing sinusoidally varying duty ratio delta (d). The proposed topology is compared with traditional inverter topologies and it is proved that the new topology requires minimum amount of DC bus voltage (i.e. for generating 415V RMS value of fundamental line voltage, DC Bus voltage required is only 339V). Only three high-frequency switches are required to realize TILI. To validate the system capability of DC Bus utilization, SVPWM technique has been implemented by hardware in TILI topology (here for generating 415V RMS value of fundamental line voltage, DC Bus voltage required is only 293V). The performance of newly introduced TILI topology has been validated with different load conditions such as resistive load, Three Phase Induction Motor (TPIM) load and the compatibility of TILI is verified for above applications through hardware implementation and analysis. To verify the driving capability of the TILI, speed control experiments were conducted by V/f method and implemented through hardware and its dynamic performance of operations were validated.

    Energy demand is increasing in India because of development in industries, rising population, and evolving higher life style standards. Energy efficiency is a tool to achieve a variety of policy objectives, in terms of security of supply, climate change, a balance of trade and less investment to meet growing energy needs in developing countries and to address pollution problems. All OECD countries (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) and an increasing number of Non-OECD countries are implementing a wide range of policy measures on energy efficiency. In this paper, we discuss various market-based policies adopted worldwide to achieve energy efficiency. Worldwide there is growing interest in the use of market-based policy instruments offer efficiency and flexibility advantages over more traditional energy efficiency approaches. The adoption of energy-efficiency laws with a strong component related to energy efficiency is a growing approach to reinforce the institutional setting for energy efficiency.

  • LVRT capability enhancement for grid connected distributed synchronous generators using switch-in braking resistors

    The low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability is one of the critical requirements for distributed power generator connecting to power grid in many distribution codes, especially for the power grids with high penetration of distributed power generation. There has been much research conducted on LVRT capability enhancement for wind and solar power generators. This paper studies the applicability and the effects on LVRT capability enhancement for distributed synchronous generator by three methods which are generally applied for transient stability enhancement and current limiting purpose. The methods are inertia increment, series braking resistor and neutral connected braking resistor.

  • Utilization of low cost RF harvester circuit in harnessing electrical energy from multiband RF signals

    Electromagnetic energy harvesting holds a promising future for powering up low power electronic devices in wireless technology circuits. This paper presents an RF energy harvesting system that can harvest energy from the ambient surroundings at the downlink radio frequency range of 700MHz, 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz band. The harvesting system aimed to provide a new generation and alternative source of energy for powering up low power devices, specifically remote devise. In this project, we will harness the freely available emitted radio frequency signals from different existing frequency bands used by telecommunication companies and utilize it by converting it into a usable DC power using linear rectangular patch antennas resonant at the specified bands and a converter circuit in the form of radiant energy collector for the purpose of optimization and conservation of energy thru the concept of reuse & recycle. It aims to create a device that maximizes the freely available radio frequency signals by using a low cost rectenna design and convert it directly to electrical energy and reduce the demand of electricity especially in areas with abundance of ambient RF signals. The research involves design, experiments, assembling and optimization of the circuit. The study is limited to variant output, as preliminary results due to certain variables. The study opens its door to future researches in which the regulation of the output voltage leads to the utilization of the energy in powering up low-powered sensors located in the facilities such as telecom room to lessen the operational expenses (OPEX).

    Recent growth of power semiconductor device market has been driven largely by the growing demand for an efficient way to convert and distribute energy in the field of renewable energy, electrical vehicles, aerospace, marine and applications. For safety, critical applications, temperature management and control are the most important functions. Therefore, estimating or measuring the junction temperature of the power semiconductor device is useful to perform thermal management and converter control. Several methods have been published to measure the junction temperature of the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). This paper attempts to summarize the past developments and recent advances in measuring junction temperature of power semiconductor device is presented. Finally, the promising methods are recommended for future work.

  • Additive manufacturing process towards wind turbine components

    In current Industrial world, there has been an increase in demand for wind power. Few of the major challenges in wind industry is the component complexity and material reliability. Thus, there is a need of determining alternative and more efficient manufacturing method. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a process which enables layer-wise fabrication of complex parts directly from CAD files without part-specific tooling. Additive manufacturing increases design freedom for building complex part geometries that cannot be made by traditional manufacturing methods. The ability to build customized integrated parts with less material wastage is desirable. The main aim of this paper is to discuss about the possibilities of using AM in spare parts production in wind Industry. To justify the compatibility of AM, there is a need to determine the loads acting on the wind turbine components. Hence, load analysis of AOC 50 kW reference wind turbine was simulated through FAST and Rainflow counting algorithm. The results from the simulations were used to compare the experimental fatigue data of AM material with one of commonly used wind turbine material.

  • Virtual synchronous generators for microgrid stabilization : Modeling, implementation and experimental validation on a microgrid laboratory

    Microgrids with a high share of renewables may become the keystone of the new energy transition. With the present inverters interfacing the various DERs (Distributed Energy Resources) to microgrids, the stability of such power systems is threatened if the share of renewables increases. In this paper a robust solution to solve this problem is presented. The proposed solution is based on the concept of Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) for inverter control that was enhanced to consider various practical aspects leading to a robust inverter brick facing all the critical microgrid situations. Experimental results conducted on a microgrid laboratory are also presented to let the reader assess the performances of the proposed solution.

    Testing and verification of high-level and low-level control, modulation, fault handling and converter co-ordination for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) requires development of experimental prototype converters. In this paper, we provide a a complete overview of the MMC-based experimental prototype at UNSW Sydney (The University of New South Wales) including the structure of the sub-modules, communication, control and protection functions as well as the possible configurations of the system. The prototype, rated at a dc voltage of up to 800 V and power of 20 kVA and can be used to study the operation of a single converter, back-to-back and point-to-point connections as well as multi-terminal systems.

  • Implementation of DC/DC converter with high frequency transformer (DHFT) in hybrid AC/DC microgrid

    Hybrid AC/DC microgrid is a compromised solution to cater for the increasing penetration of DC-compatible energy sources, storages and loads. In this paper, DC/DC converter with High Frequency Transformer (DHFT) is proposed to replace the conventional bulky transformer for bus voltage matching and galvanic isolation. Various DHFT topologies have been compared and CLLC-type has been recommended due to its capabilities of bidirectional power flow, seamless transition and low switching loss. Different operating scenarios of the hybrid AC/DC microgrid have been analyzed and DHFT open-loop control has been selected to simplify systematic coordination. DHFT are designed in order to maximize the conversion efficiency and minimize output voltage variations in different loading conditions. Lab-scale prototypes of the DHFT and hybrid AC/DC microgrid have been developed for experimental verifications. The performances of DHFT and system in both steady state and transient states have been confirmed.

  • Thermal management system design for batteries packs of electric vehicles: A survey

    In perspective of increasing environmental degradation, battery packs for electric vehicle is a major focus of study. The battery packs operate at higher current discharge rate to provide enough energy and power to vehicle. During this, enormous amount of heat is generated, which potentially causes safety issues, such as overheating, combustion, explosion. Therefore, the need of design of an efficient thermal management system is essential for reducing any accidents that might occur due to these problems. The present work will conduct detailed survey on the thermal management system design for cooling of the battery packs. This work provides an overview of the present research focus, and points out some possible new research directions to design a more efficient thermal management system. The survey discusses the three important types of thermal management strategies: air management, fluid management and phase-change materials. Parallel air management design can efficiently moderate the temperature rise with a less cost in volume, weight and fee, while liquid management demands more accessories and cost more, and the phase-change materials also guarantee excellent heat dissipation. The critical directions of research identified are a) Multi-objective Optimization of battery pack variables b) Battery cell uniformity and equalization c) Mechanical design of light weight and volume battery pack d) Sustainable and robust battery pack. Based on these findings, authors intend to innovate a compact thermal design of a battery pack that is safe, reliable and economically viable.

  • Improvement of frequency stability in power electronics-based power systems

    This paper explores the frequency instability mechanism in modern power electronics-based power systems. It is revealed that the lack of damping and inertia together with the slow response of the frequency regulator should be responsible for frequency instability issues. As a result, three possible solutions targeting at damping enhancement, inertia emulation, and response acceleration are employed to effectively improve the system frequency stability. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of theoretical analyses.

  • Output double-line frequency ripple reduction method for high power density interleaved boost converters in power factor correction applications

    A three-phase interleaved boost converter stage of an ac-dc PFC converter that uses GaN switches is developed that utilizes a feed-forward band-stop filter control method to suppress low-frequency output voltage ripple. To increase power density, the converter switches at 500 kHz, operates in triangular current mode (TCM) to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS), and uses GaN switching devices. A 1-kW laboratory prototype was designed and tested to verify feasibility. With the proposed controller, output ripple was reduced by 70\%. Overall efficiency is greater than 96.5\% and power density is 65.028 W/in3.

  • Influence of boundary condition assumption on thermoelectric generator geometry design

    To achieve high efficiency and power output, thermoelectric module geometry needs to be carefully designed. Thermoelectric module height is a major design parameter that can significantly influence output power. This paper present a mathematical model of thermoelectric generator derived from fundamental transportation equation. Module height optimization is conducted to achieve maximum power. The effect of different boundary condition on the optimal geometry is also investigated. It is found that optimal module height under constant temperature boundary condition is around 2mm, while module height under constant heat flux boundary condition is the larger the better.

    In this paper, the effect of capacitor voltage ripple on current quality in a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) low-capacitance static compensator (LC-StatCom) with symmetrical I-V characteristics is investigated. Total harmonic distortion of the synthesized ac voltage of an H-bridge converter operating with different capacitor voltage ripples is evaluated for both inductive and capacitive operating modes. Simulation-based analyses on a 350-VA three-cell CHB LC-StatCom system are provided to demonstrate LC-StatCom's effectiveness to provide high quality current compared to a conventional StatCom.

1.服务说明

(1)要成为系统服务用户必须自行配备上网的所需设备,包括个人微信使用终端、调制解调器或其他必备上网装置,并自行负担个人上网所支付的与此服务有关的网络费用;

(2)用户应向本平台上提供单位名称、姓名、电子邮箱、手机号码,通过手机验证后才能收到外文文献电子邮件;

(3)除按照国家法律法规、第三方(本服务中指国家工程技术图书馆)和本服务要求提供用户的个人资料外,本平台不额外要求用户提供个人隐私信息;

(4)外文文献一经购买,无论用户是否实际使用,不得退款;

(5)外文文献原文是由国家工程技术图书馆负责提供。

2.合理使用

根据相关法律规定,本平台及其所提供的外文期刊、外文会议、外文学位论文和外文科技报告文献仅供购买服务的用户(即授权用户)为个人目的或课堂教学目的使用,授权用户可以对本平台的文献进行以下合理使用:

(1)通过安全网络访问服务器对网络数据库进行检索;

(2)以个人研究和学习为目的,在线阅读检索结果;

(3)通过文献传递获取电子文献供授权用户个人研究和学习使用;

(4)非以商业营利为目的承担正常教学任务的授权用户,为教学需要,可少量复制文献供教学人员使用,同时应指明作者姓名和文献名称。例如授权用户可少量复制作为教学参考资料的文献供从事课堂教授的教师使用,可少量文献复制到供本单位教学使用的内部网络中的安全计算机上,供选修特定课程的学生在该课程课堂教学期间和地点通过内部网络进行阅读。

3.侵权行为

除上述合理使用方式外,不得以任何方式对本平台全部或者部分文献进行复制、出版、发行、传播、转让、商业或其他开发,授权用户以下(但不仅限于以下)超出合理使用范围的行为,属侵犯知识产权行为,须严格禁止:

(1)把外文文献以公共方式提供给非授权用户使用;

(2)利用外文文献对非授权用户提供文献服务;

(3)利用外文文献进行商业服务或支持商业服务;

(4)利用外文文献内容汇编生成二次产品,提供公共或商业服务;

(5)将外文文献使用在任何其他网站或计算机联网环境中,包括但不仅限于在国际互联网和万维网站上。

4.侵权责任

授权用户应在法律规定的其超出合理使用范围内使用本平台提供的文献,若因授权用户的侵权使用行为被相关权利人主张权利而产生任何纠纷、仲裁、诉讼,或遭到国家相关部门处理,由授权用户承担全部法律责任并使本平台方免责,授权用户还应赔偿因上述原因给本平台方造成的全部直接和间接损失,包括但不限于律师费用、诉讼及仲裁费用、财务费用及差旅费等。一经发现用户的使用情况超出著作权法规定的合理使用范围,本平台有权立即封禁该用户的服务账户,并有权终止向用户提供本协议约定的服务而无须承担违约责任。

5.免责声明

(1)本平台仅为根据您的搜索指令提供搜索服务、数据链接服务和电子邮件原文传递服务,搜索结果和原文数据均来自第三方网站,六维联合不会对第三方网站内容作任何实质性的编辑、整理、修改;

(2)本平台对服务及服务所涉文献信息不作任何明示或暗示的保证,包括但不限于服务一定会满足用户的使用要求、服务的及时性、持续性、安全性、准确性以及服务所涉及文献的准确性、完整行、可靠性;

(3)本平台不保证所提供的服务和服务所涉文献信息来源客观准确,对于任何因信赖或使用获取的文献信息,而给用户造成任何直接或间接损失,本平台均不承担责任;本平台不因用户与任何第三方产生的争议或诉讼承担任何责任。

(4)用户签署本协议即意味着理解且不要求六维联合在发生不可抗力情况下承担责任。不可抗力是指不能合理控制、不可预见或即使预见亦无法避免的事件,包括但不限于政府行为、地震、台风、洪水、火灾或其它天灾、战争或任何其它类似事件。鉴于互联网之特殊性质,不可抗力还包含非因本平台原因导致本服务无法正常运行、服务中断或延迟的情形,包括黑客攻击,电信部门技术调整导致之重大影响,因政府管制而造成之暂时关闭,病毒侵袭,网站升级、系统停机维护或通讯终端、电信设备出现故障导致无法进行数据传输等。

6.其他规定

(1)本协议内容受中华人民共和国法律的约束。如果本协议中任何规定被裁定为无效或不可强制执行,该项规定应被撤销,而其余规定继续有效。

(2)本协议的最终解释权归六维联合。

(3)本协议条款可由六维联合随时全部或部分转让。未经六维联合事先明确书面同意,用户不得以任何方式转让本协议条款。

注意:六维联合未就您或其他人士的某项违约行为采取行动,并不表明六维联合就任何继后或类似的违约事件放弃采取行动的权利。
