As corporate financial obligations skyrocket from rising health care costs, executives consider cost-effective practices and program modifications to improve productivity and profitability. The guiding research question for this study was, "How do employees perceive various characteristics of mandated versus voluntary corporate wellness programs?" To elicit employee participation in a corporate wellness program, research respondents indicated the need for more than just an exercise regime. They needed to understand the personal benefits of a program, to receive extrinsic incentives for participating, control over wellness program participation, and fears concerning wellness programs addressed. Additional research could include how business trends and health statistics affect prospective corporate location decisions for future commerce.
