Copyrighted materials are used by faculty throughout the world of higher education, although the way in which faculty learn about and understand how the copyright law applies to the materials that they use varies greatly. After describing the contours of how organizations of higher education promote copyright and how faculty learn to enact the law in their daily work lives with copyrighted materials, the author develops a typification of understanding for policies that must be implemented by untrained personnel who are not monitored by any oversight agency.
