It was less than 10 years ago that DNA microarrays were hailed as a revolutionary new way of examining biological phenomena at the level of the entire genome rather than one gene at a time. For the first few years, RNA-expression profiling was the obvious (and for all practical purposes the only) application. Before long, however, the potential of the technology for large-scale examination of many different facets of the complexity of living organisms became increasingly apparent. As a result, recent years have seen an explosion of applications that go far beyond merely evaluating gene-expression levels. In parallel, the need for increasingly sophisticated analysis of array data has driven the creation of a whole new field in biostatistics and bioinformatics.
