A new heat-activated system for fusing a thermoplastic jacket over field-weld joints in pipe lines that have been coated with two and three-layer plastics has shown success in laboratory and field applications.The timing of the new development-which is said to rival the plant-applied coating on the pipe in its mechanical protection performanc-is beneficial. Many installations outside the U.S. today use two-layer polyethylene (2LPE) and three-layer polyethylene/polypropylene (3LPE/PP) plant-applied coatings for corrosion control and mechanical protection. Some pipe line owners around the world seem to have jumped straight from coal tar to extruded 3LPE/PP coatings.
