The demerger of BG's two main businesses, the pipe line subsidiary Transco and BG International, was completed at the end of October after shareholders gave their approval. Transco, the regulated utility which owns and operates most of Britain's gas transportation system, is now part of a new holding company called Lattice Group plc. The name Lattice was chosen to reflect the activities of the group which now extend beyond gas into the broader area of infrastructure technology. In a world of dotcoms, many may find the name rather quaint, archaic or even arcane. But, no doubt, someone somewhere will make the necessary connection between the "criss-cross" meaning of the word lattice and network -creating activities of the group.
