The Ormat Energy Converter (OEC)-a remote power system-recently passed a milestone in its service offshore when 12 installed units completed more than 80-unit-years of operation without a total loss of power. The OEC for offshore applications-such as powering SCADA, navigation aids, telemetry and for floating and recharge of secondary cell batteries-is a closed-cycle vapor turbo-generator.AGIP installed the first OEC units for use on unmanned offshore platforms in the Adriatic Sea. Since 1976, numerous OEC units have been used on unattended offshore facility installations for AGIP and other companies such as ELF (in the Atlantic Ocean offshore Gabon) and Total (in the Java Sea, offshore Indonesia). In these applications, one or two gas-fired OEC units are erected on the deck of an unmanned offshore gas platform, to operate continuously.
