Some 23,981 mi (38,593 km) of natural gas, crude oil and refined petroleum products pipe lines are under construction or planned in Europe. Most of this total is planned for future activity, primarily representing projects originating in the Caspian Sea area and other countries of the Former Soviet Union. Emphasis continues to be on natural gas, accounting for 18,272 mi (29,405 km) of the total mileage. By far, the FSU leads the way with some 6,447 mi (10,375 km) projected for future work. This does not include mileage for proposed sys- tems to carry natural gas to East Asian markets. North Sea activity remains consistent with the completion of Europipe Ⅱ and new projects, such as Norway's Asgard, come into play.
