摘要

A "Polypill" is a tablet or capsule consisting of a combination of drugs to reduce several cardiovascular risk factors simultaneously (Wald and Law, 2003). The Polypill approach involves offering a Polypill to anyone above a specified age (e.g. 55 years) without selection based on blood pressure or cholesterol levels. The approach recognises the importance of adopting a simple strategy and the fact that cholesterol and blood pressure measurements add little to age in predicting who will and will not suffer a future cardiovascular disease event (Wald et al., 1999). A series of papers proposing the Polypill in 2003 showed that, with full adherence to treatment, it would be expected to reduce a person's risk of coronary heart disease and stroke by over 80% (Wald and Law, 2003; Law et al., 2003a,b).
