The Woodlawn Aquaculture facility is part of the Woodlawn Eco-Precinct, a former open-cut mine now used primarily as a bioreactor producing green energy from waste in landfill. Here, methane gas rising from decomposing rubbish fuels electricity generators, which in turn emit heat that warms deep ponds filled with around 600 silver perch. Waste from the fish feeds hydroponically grown silver beet, mint and capsicums in adjoining tanks. Plants filter the water for the fish, completing the cycle of aquaponics.
