Acornerstone of Arab economies and critical for self-sufficiency, agriculture is looked to for the region's food security. According to estimates released by a 2007 Unified Arab Economic Report, arable land in the Arab world amounts to 80 million acres (32.3 million ha), 41.1% l29 million acres/11.74 million ha) of which is cultivated. Accounting for more than 5% of the world's population, the Arab nations hold less than 1 % of global water resources. Over the past decades, while demographic and economic growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, and the expansion of irrigated agricultural land have all contributed to an unsustainable increase in water consumption, supply of water in the Arabian Peninsula has now reached a critical point.
