Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that results in social behavioural and language impairment. In terms morbidity, outcome and impact on t the most devastating diso continue with the discussion. As early as 1979, it was hypothesised that ASD may arise from an opioid peptide excess; it had been demonstrated that enhancement of the endogenous opioid system, or administration of the opiates to infant animals, results in autistic-like symptoms. The exogenous opioid peptides implicated are particularly those derived from dietary proteins, predominantly gliadin, a component of gluten and casein, a protein from cow's milk. This concept is supported by the detection of abnormal peptide components in the urine of ASD subjects.
