A seedbed environment that encourages early germination and emergence of seeds is necessary to attain successful crop establishment and maximum crop yields in reduced and no tillage practices. Furrow opener design alters the seedbed environmental characteristics by affecting soil water content, soil strength, seed and fertiliser placement, soil aeration and soil temperature, consequently affecting crop growth. The effect of variation in wing width and slot length of narrow seeding points on seedbed soil physical conditions has recently been studied by researchers from the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide.
