Farmers around Australia are rushing to get a piece of this record-breaking crop as plantings surge through the million-hectare barrier. The release of several new canola varieties and the number of growers realising the potential of this crop will boost Australian plantings in 1997-98. Early indications suggested that plantings would he boosted by 51 per cent but this estimate seems conservative. A recent survey showed that plantings could be as high as 930,000ha but some officials believe that plantings could reach the magical one million hectare mark.
