It's true, I'm afraid-the plural is correct. I have more than one editor. And very often they tell me that my editorials are out of control. Not only do they correct my spelling and relocate my commas: they cut things that I have considered witty, insightful, or simply brilliant. Now, I am very aware that editors have a very bad reputation for doing the same thing to others-removing 10 pages of very carefully written text, simply because the article is deemed too long; deleting a figure or a table with the stroke of a pen; even-can you imagine?-rejecting the article. Nevertheless, I would like to assure you that there are no shortcuts into the world of publishing. The rules are the same for you as they are for me. And today I will prove it-I will come clean and go public about my two boxes of "reject" letters, and even reveal some of these witty pieces that my editors-yes, even my editors who also happen to be students-have cut from these wonderful editorials.
