While EU ware market prices are either flat or rising slowly, the processing market has been galvanised by old crop buying because of increasing concerns over new crop prospects and deteriorating old crop quality. April 2006 futures prices have also rocketed up over the past week and could provide a hedging opportunity. In many countries new crop markets are however under pressure as lingering stocks from Mediterranean countries compete with local produce. Spanish potato prices have extended their recent plunge and markets are also under pressure in Portugal. New crop weakness could be extended because of the concertina effect of delayed supplies. Israel is lowering its export target following a disappointing season. Prince Edward Island is no longer Canada's leading exporter, while McCain is building a new processing plant in India and considering a new plant in western Siberia. Germany's Bahlsen is entering the Russian snacks market and a new packing plant has been opened near Lille in France. According to German research, blue potatoes are good for you. Three Moroccans have been sent to prison for smuggling drugs in a potato consignment. EU political concerns have taken the shine off the euro, and this could be important for UK farmers, while there is unsightly squabbling over the EU budget.
