Financial decline of companies is often undetectable because the evidence of organizational woes is not apparent from the few financial measures typically examined. The authors use a design for Six Sigma: the define, measure, analyze, design, verify (DMADV) methodology approach to unravel this problem. An exceptional anomaly detection score quantifies the difference between a target financial measure and the company's own past performance or its competitors' current performance via standard deviations for signaling anomalous trends in a company's performance. This technique is similar to multivariate control charts.
