Purpose: To point out that if one makes up or alters the data in a clinical trial it will leave a trail that a good statistician can follow. Summary: Much hangs on the results of clinical trials - for the patients, new and better treatments; for clinicians, prestige, promotion and pay. Thus the temptation to fabricate or falsify results or a trial is large. Most recorded such cases relate to ethical review and only less than 1% to research frauds. This short article does some loud thinking with a view to assist in fraud detection.
