Statistical theory of records is reviewed in monographs by (Refs. 1, 2). The situation considered in this note is the following. There is an existing set of ordered values X_1＞X_2.... These represent the observed order statistics from a large random sample of size n drawn sequentially from an unknown distribution F with upper tail in the Gumbel domain of attraction, including the normal, lognormal, gamma and Gumbel itself, but not the uniform or Cauchy (Ref. 3).
