The 6.0% increase in revenue growth in 2010 gave the paper and products industry a good start on the road to recovery. On the packaging side, the recovery in manufacturing, particularly processed food, led to an increase in the demand for boxboard and corrugated containers. However, on the paper side, especially with printing/writing paper and newsprint, consumption remained weak as US labor markets remained depressed. The rapid growth of electronic communication and the weakness in printing and publishing put additional downward pressure on paper demand. Regardless, what truly gave the paper and products industry a boost in revenues in 2010 was a 5.3% rise in average pricing.
