Carbon steel prices are mixed but generally rising globally as part of a cyclical upturn. Prices increased first in the United States and are now moving cautiously upward in Europe and China. Long products and plate are slightly above fundamentals in the United States and will see erratic and mild declines, while sheet will resume upward movement over the second quarter. Expect US prices to peak in early summer and Asia to peak in late summer or early autumn. Prices in China may jump very sharply in coming months. Production fell 17.2% from May 2011 to November 2011, implying a sharp pull-down in inventory, and barely bounced in December and January. Now that the Chinese New Year celebrations are over, businesses are returning to work and should increase buying. Prices are starting to rise, and with low inventory a buying spree should cause tight markets.
