Battery safety: In Germany there is a discussion brewing about the safety of storage systems. However, it is also possible to operate them safely. Anyone looking to see nice fireworks only has to enter the terms "lithium", "battery" and "explosion" on YouTube where there are a myriad of films of bursting lithium batteries. That there is the threat of an image problem should have become clear when Boeing's Dreamliner was grounded because of burning batteries. The question is whether or not these are only isolated examples, or if there is a genuine safety risk? Andreas Sander, of the textile company K-Tex, also investigates exploding batteries. He has already shown similar films at the Energy Storage conference. But, why an expert for textiles? Because there are countermeasures. Sander's company develops bags for packaging lithium batteries. A battery for five kilowatt hours of electricity releases 25 to 50 kilowatt hours of chemical energy in the case of fire - the fire load is approximately eight to ten times greater than that of lead batteries. A large share of the energy is contained in gases which, in the case of damage, first cause a lithium battery to swell and then to burst. "The packaging allows these gases to escape without catching fire," he points out. "They contain more than half of the energy from the fire." The rest of the fire on the films then remains under control. There is no reason why this should not also be possible with the housing of a storage system for a photovoltaic installation.
