Reviews the book, Another Kind of Evidence by Norbert Freedman, Marvin Hurvich, and Rhonda Ward, with Jesse D. Geller and Joan Hoffenberg (see record 2011-08684-000). The authors of this book have bravely joined the effort to bring empirical methods and values to the clinical practice of psychoanalysis. They wish to reduce the gap between "psychoanalysis and science...in order to establish the legitimacy of our field of study...(It) is a commitment to research without reduction, an attempt to find and apply methodologies that give rise to evidence for psychoanalytic concepts and clinical phenomena...another kind of evidence." They believe psychoanalysis will never be a fully legitimate enterprise until there is a solid basis of empirical data that support the tenets and practice of psychoanalysis. The book is divided into three sections and 18 chapters, all devoted to demonstrating the legitimacy of psychoanalytic treatment and concepts.
