Synthetic aperture radar has gone a long way to revolutionising the world of unmanned aerial vehicles. Tom Withington looks at the recent progress that has been made in this field. In the chaotic final few hours of Operation Desert Storm in February 1991, hundreds of stolen Kuwaiti cars and trucks, along with Iraqi Army vehicles, headed home carrying looted goods and soldiers trying frantically to get out of the country which they had occupied. They were on the run from coalition ground forces and air power, and were hoping for a quick getaway to Iraq down Highway 80 to safety. However, for many in this huge convoy, which snaked its way across the Mutla Ridge, the highest point in Kuwait, they would never see Iraq again.
